Commitment to achieving net zero

Power2 is committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

Baseline emissions footprint

Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases that have been produced
in the past and were produced prior to the introduction of any strategies to reduce
emissions. Baseline emissions are the reference point against which emissions
reduction can be measured.

Baseline year: To February 2023
Additional details relating to the baseline emissions calculations.
Power2 began collecting emissions data in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol for our financial year ending 28 February 2023. This was our first year reporting on our emissions and this period will become our Baseline.

Power2 does not have Scope 1 emissions. Scope 2 has been reported as zero as Power2 has no control over these elements or sight of relevant evidence. The scope 2 emissions are reported by landlords in both office locations, so are not included here to avoid double counting in this area.

Full scope 3 data was not collected during the baseline year but strong estimates have been made. Our reporting in this area will include vehicle emissions, rail and tram transportation and employee commuting. Data has been gathered from the expense claims system and our rail account. We are in the process of refining how we gather scope 3 emission data in order to establish a clear baseline and aim to include this in the report for the 2026 financial year. The current calculations do not include employee commuting as the data is not available.
Baseline year emissions: 1 March 2022 to 28 February 2023
EMISSIONSTOTAL (tCO2e)
Scope 10.00 (no on-site combustion of fuel for heating)
Scope 20.00 (no control or evidence)
Scope 3 (Included Sources)Category 4: Upstream transportation and distribution: 36.4 Category 5: Waste generated: 0.15 Category 6: Business travel: 23.1 Category 9: Downstream transportation and distribution: 0 Scope 3 Total*: 59.65
Total emissions59.65

* Categories 4 (upstream transportation and distribution), 5 (waste generated in operations), 6 (business travel), and 9 (downstream transportation and distribution) have been included in our scope 3 calculations. Category 7 (employee commuting) has been excluded as the data is not available. We will work with staff to agree the best way to capture this data and record any change.

Emissions reduction targets

In order to progress to achieving Net Zero, we have adopted the following carbon reduction targets.

We project that carbon emissions will decrease over the next seven years to 50 tCO2e by 2030. This is a reduction of 17%. Progress against these targets can be seen in the graph below:

Whilst we are working towards a net zero target, we expect to see an increase in our reported carbon emissions from our base year to the next reported year. This, however, will not be a true representation of the impact of our carbon reduction projects and is a result of having been able to capture data for category 7 emissions, where the gap has been identified and an initiative identified to address. Consequently, with the additional emission source, next year we will be unable to report progress against our base year on a like for like basis.

In the past year we have not reduced our emissions but maintained at 54.7 tCO2e, while it is disappointing not to have had a reduction in the last year we are happy not to have increased and still be ahead of our target emissions by 42.7%, and therefore making good progress to reduce our emissions by 17% by 2030.

Carbon reduction projects

The following environmental management measures and projects have been completed or implemented since 2020. Whilst we understand these projects have led to a reduction in carbon emissions, we are unable to quantify the extent as we were not measuring our carbon emissions at this point and no longer have a like for like scenario. Over the last year Power2 has changed its financial and performance year and we propose to change the reporting year for this plan as well so that everything is in alignment and makes reporting easier. This means that the next update will cover the period of April 2025 to July 2026 and it is anticipated that the carbon reduction plan will next be updated in August 2026.

Completed carbon reduction initiatives

Since 2020 we have completed or implemented the following environmental management measures and projects:

  • Reduced the size of our London office space.
  • Launched a hybrid approach to working for 100% of our staff, which supports homeworking and brings a reduction in the amount of carbon generated through employee commuting.
  • Improved our Environmental Sustainability policy by including initiatives that Power2 will focus on in order to reduce our carbon emissions.
  • Initiated the internal Net Zero work. This included gathering data to inform our baseline scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon emissions.
  • Had environmental considerations as a priority for refurbishing offices including reusing and recycling furniture.

Over the past year we have not introduced any new initiatives but have reshared with staff what items can be recycled and how to do this. We have continued with all previous actions that have been implemented.

Planned carbon reduction initiatives

Power2 realises that the plans detailed in the baseline year were too ambitious to be completed in a 12-month cycle, in 2024 we amended our plans to be delivered over a three-year period. These plans will allow us to build on our existing knowledge and understanding by implementing the following projects:

  • Identify gaps in scope 1, 2 and 3 reportable carbon emissions – establish methodology for capturing any missing data sources and recalculate baseline emissions.
  • Provide Carbon literacy training to key staff.
  • Establish internal communications about the importance of the Net Zero work and engaging ways to encourage colleagues to commit to making changes.
  • Set organisation-wide carbon emissions reduction targets, which include:
  • Reducing energy use – turning the lights off when leaving office is a good way to save energy.
  • Reducing water use – checking for dripping taps and pipes can reduce water use within the workplace.
  • Minimising waste and recycling more – recycling bins and minimising printing will help reduce the business’ carbon footprint.
  • Promoting use of non-motorised transport – encourage staff to walk, cycle, use public transport or car share when attending meetings and/or projects. Provide cycle loan scheme for all employees.
  • Promoting use of technology – access to cloud storage when on the move can reduce the amount of printed material required and use of video conferencing will reduce the amount of travel needed.
  • Staff travel survey – conducted a staff travel survey to understand our employee commuting emissions. This survey will be repeated on a two-year cycle.
  • Change the food offering at catered events to provide more (or exclusive) vegan and vegetarian produce.
  • Introduce an electric car salary sacrifice scheme for employees.
  • Donate all used, broken and out of service technology where we can see both an environmental and social impact.
  • Explore how carbon literacy and carbon reduction initiatives can be embedded into our programmes with children and young people.

More broadly we will be looking to align with the principles of the ISO14001 Environmental Management Systems standard and will review operations against the standard to identify any compliance gaps.
